Forked Lake Gave Us a Taste of Cool, August Adirondack Mornings
Canoeists paddle across the lake, with the warm water causing a mist to form in the early morning.

While canoeing, we listened as common loons called across the lake. More isolated camping is available to those lucky enough to check in when an island site is available.

Hornbeck Canoes

This photo of Forked Lake was taken from a Kevlar Hornbeck canoe. This watercraft allowed us to paddle quietly to remote areas to view wildlife, including common loons feeding their young. Forked Lake is a more remote lake, and quiet, especially compared to the more southerly Adirondack Lakes. Motorized watercraft here are less common, and as a result, wildlife can live and breed undisturbed in their native habitat. Only a few hundred loons remain in the Adirondacks, and their ability to reproduce is critical.

Goodnow Mountain View
A hike up Goodnow Mountain near Newcomb was a good warm-up for our assault on Blue Mountain the later same week.

A Climb Up Blue Mountain
We made it up the rocky path of Blue Mountain and back to the car in about four hours. This trail is a strenuous climb, and for those out of shape, it can be a challenge.

Looking toward the trail from the summit of Blue Mountain, the hike looks easy, but a few hundred feet from the summit, we found our descent more difficult because of the number of large rocks that made our footing uncertain. This is a well-worn path, and we met many other parties of hikers as we traveled both ways.

Sagamore Path Circles Lake
The path around Sagamore Lake provides a leisurely stroll in a relatively flat area. A boat maker prepares a watercraft with the same craftsmanship used a hundred years ago at historic Camp Sagamore. The camp is now open for tours and special interest groups.

Camp Golden Retriever

Sally retrieves a water bottle while camping at Forked Lake, but didn't seem to frighten the mallards that came by daily to check for handouts.
